MATH OLYMPIAD
What is Math Olympiad?
Math Olympiad is a competition that challenges pre-university students with problems requiring mathematical and logical reasoning, fostering interest in math and identifying talented individuals. These contests, ranging from elementary to international levels, involve rigorous problem-solving, sometimes including proof-based math, and aim to develop students' critical thinking, creativity and enthusiasm for the subject.
At Highcroft, Math Olympiad is a PTA-sponsored program that provides monthly problem-solving contests for 4th and 5th graders. The monthly contests will be administered November - March at our school.
Because this program is PTA-led, it is a requirement that parents of all selected students are PTA members. We are able to accept 35 total students for this club.
Club Dues
Dues for this club are $60 / student. These dues are used to fund resources needed for the club meetings.
Scholarships are available for students in need. Please contact Angela Tew (atew1@wcpss.net) if you are in need of assistance.
Parent Involvement
Parents with children in Math Olympiad will need to:
- Support their student with weekly practice questions and make sure they are completed on time.
- Ensure their student attends the bi-weekly (every 2 weeks) practice meetings.
- Manage test-day preparations.
- Stay informed about important test dates.
We do need some parents to serve as Coaches in Math Olympiad. In order to serve as a coach, you must be a Registered Volunteer. Please make sure you have completed this process with Wake County before offering to help.
Coaches will:
- Attend the bi-weekly (every 2 weeks) practice meetings and coach the students through conceptual math problems.
- Share personal expertise with the students.
- Communicate with a small group of students outside of meetings as needed to support mathematical development and completion of math problems.
- Assist the Lead Teachers with the selection of the practice problems and strategies.
Commitment Level
The bi-weekly (every 2 weeks) meetings are mandatory, so students can ask questions, collaborate and share ideas. This will help them strengthen their math strategies and problem solving skills.
Outside of the school meetings, students may be assigned a Coach to support the completion of their weekly math problems.
Meetings:
Meeting schedule is TBD, as we first must establish the teams. Meetings will take place every other Thursday from 8 - 8:45a.
