What is Advocacy?

You know your friendly HDE PTA, but did you know that the PTA operates at the local, county, state, and national levels as "the oldest and largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States" (PTA.org)?

The National PTA was founded in 1897 and was originally called the National Congress of Mothers. Since then, the PTA has expanded to include parents, grandparents, foster parents, teachers, and caregivers of all types.

When you join your PTA, you become part of the 120+-year legacy of this focused and powerful organization.

The PTA knows that when we speak for every child with one voice, we can achieve great things, and over the years, PTA and its millions of members have advocated for universal kindergarten, the National School Lunch Program, and increased family engagement in the education and well-being of every child.

In the context of PTA, advocacy looks like:

  • joining the PTA to create a network of caring adults who are devoted to making a difference.
  • speaking up for children in schools, communities, the halls of government, and organizations that make decisions that affect kids.
  • familiarizing yourself with the PTA's positions on issues impacting children.
  • staying informed and supporting the North Carolina PTA's advocacy priorities and advocacy efforts.
  • signing up for action alerts via the National PTA Takes Action Network.
  • clicking here to review active legislation and see how the National PTA will Take Action.
  • identifying your state senator and state representative and contacting them regarding child-related issues that are important to you.
  • making use of Family Resources found here.
  • attending a school board meeting (find the Wake County Board of Education calendar here).
